#MeToo trends on social media following Weinstein allegations

Over various social media platforms, the hashtag “Me Too” is trending and spreading awareness about sexual assault. People who have been sexually assaulted are speaking up and posting #MeToo on social media to let the world know how big of an issue it is.

This trend was started by actress Alyssa Milano who tweeted, “If you’ve been sexually harassed or assaulted write ‘me too’ as a reply to this tweet.”

The tweet received over 64,000 responses.

The hashtag comes in light of the accusations against Hollywood film producer Harvey Weinstein sexually assaulting various actresses.

According to Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network or RAINN, every 98 seconds, someone is sexually assaulted.

To help end sexual assault, here are some things to be aware of: Communicate consent when engaging in sexual activity; you can always withdraw consent at any time; if you’re at risk, then contact an authority; and become an activist of stopping sexual assault.
