Golfers bring home success

The boys golf team had another successful year this year with various accomplishments. Although they fell just short of Pleasant Valley as a team, placing second at MAC, senior Benny Flanagan was the MAC champion with an overall total of 151. Seniors Trever Rogan and Steven Gottwald also placed in the top 10 at the MAC tournament, Rogan placed seventh and Gottwald placed ninth.

“The second day of MAC was my favorite day, especially the last four holes because I birdied two of them. I was also playing with this kid from PV, and it was pretty much down to us two who would win. Winning was probably the proudest moment of my high school career. It was amazing, to say the least,” Flanagan said.

Placing well in MAC was just one accomplishment for the team and the individual players. Steven Gottwald qualified for state with a 77 during the district’s tournament. Gottwald went on to shoot a total of 158 at the state tournament in Marshalltown.

“Qualifying for state was what exceeded my expectations for the season because I didn’t actually think I was going to make it to where I did,” Gottwald said.

Flanagan and Gottwald were only a part of the success that came this season. “Overall I think the team success was the best part of the season; even if we didn’t play well, we still finished every time either second or third, and it was just really fun to be a part of,” Flanagan said.
