When many think of sports they most generally think of ones that are connected to the school, but there are many other sports that aren’t. Even though the school has a plethora of sports to play, we can’t forget about the ones they don’t have.
Sophomore Kelley Lent is just one person who plays an “outside sport.” Lent has been skiing since her dad taught her when she was just two and started racing when she was in second grade.
“I really just love the snow and winter in general. I love everything about skiing because it’s all fun like the speed and the mental part of it,” Lent said.
However, since skiing isn’t part of the school sanctioned sport, there are many difficulties with it but also a few perks.
“I’d say the hardest part about it not being connected to the school is finding time to do it. It’s normally not near the school either, so you have to work your entire schedule around it. The greatest thing about it is that you can do it on your own time. So you’re not depending on the school, and it’s less likely to get cancelled,” Lent said.
As time has gone on, Lent has realized there are some deeper disadvantages than just finding time to do it, like with competition.
“I think it would be nice if it were connected to the school to get more people involved because it isn’t extremely popular. The team that I’m with right now isn’t as involved as some of the teams that we race in Wisconsin that are connected to the school. Since they’re connected they get more involved and have more meets so they’re at an advantage.”
Lent has had a very successful skiing career so far and plans to advance not only herself, but the team as well.
“I’d say my greatest accomplishment is probably overall where I stand placewise because I’ve usually placed in the top five in most of my races,” Lent said.
For Lent, skiing is one of her passions, and it shouldn’t be overlooked just because it’s not connected to the school right now.
“If you’re thinking about joining the ski team then you should,” Lent said.
If you’re looking for something fun and fast, then maybe skiing is something you should try.
