85 years after Chester "Whitey" Lindgren opened the first ice cream shop on Moline's 16th Street, Whitey's Ice Cream has continued to grow into a Quad City tradition.
In 1953, the company was bought by Bob Tunberg, hired by Whitey at age 15, and his wife Norma.
Today, the Tunbergs' sons, Jeff and Jon, continue to keep the local business going.
Whitey's currently has 10 locations across Iowa and Illinois, with grocery stores across the nation carrying the "Best in the Midwest."
In celebration of its 85th anniversary, Whitey's is offering $0.85 one-dip cones and $0.85 off of regular and special shakes.
On Sunday, May 20, Whitey's will give out free one-dip cones between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m.
On Tuesday morning, Whitey's announced a new flavor for its birthday, "Peanut Butter Pretzel Bark."
