Actively funding a $4,000 scholarship in memory of a former Pleasant Valley student, Carl Schillig, the “Run with Carl” race will host people from all over the Quad Cities this Labor Day.
Bettendorf students, Emma Doyle and Sarah Canfield, will be participating in the race Monday, Sept. 3. Doyle, Bettendorf’s student ambassador for the race, has devoted time spreading the word about the race by going to businesses to put out postcards and putting up signs. With her strong cross country background, Doyle plans to run the five mile race that starts at 8:15 a.m.
Despite running in a challenging meet two days before, Sarah Canfield, a cross country athlete, says that the 5K race “will be a fun one.”
“Run with Carl” was established in 1995 by the Schillig family after the passing of their teenage son, Carl, in 1994.

The run acts as a way to fund the Carl D. Schillig Memorial Fund while also keeping Carl’s spirit alive.
Although the family discontinued the race after 20 years, the Bettendorf Community Schools Foundation and the Pleasant Valley Educational Foundation work together to keep the race going each year.
