Bulldogs win third game against Hempstead

On Friday night, Sept. 7, the Bulldogs traveled to Dubuque to play against the Dubuque Hempstead Mustangs. Hempstead came into the game with a record of one win and one loss, losing to Davenport North, and beating Cedar Rapids Washington.

The Bulldogs struck first with a 6-yard touchdown run from senior running back, Austin Kalar. The extra point, however, was missed wide and opened the door for Dubuque.

The Mustangs scored shortly afterwards on a 66-yard touchdown pass. Their extra point was made, putting them up 7 to 6. After a Bulldog turnover, the Mustangs capitalized again throwing another touchdown pass and increasing their lead to 8, with a score of 14-6.

Despite the deficit, the Bulldogs fought back, scoring three unanswered touchdowns and a 30 yard field goal by senior Keegan Schmidt. Austin Kalar finished the game with 138 yards rushing and three rushing touchdowns to lead the way for the Bulldogs.

The other touchdown was a pass from Carter Bell to junior tight end, Noah Abbott. This touchdown marks the first of Abbott’s varsity career, and the only passing touchdown of the game for the Bulldogs.

The Mustangs would score again late in the fourth quarter, but it wouldn’t be enough. The Bulldogs won with a score of 29 to 21. The Bulldogs improved to 3-0 and will play potentially their toughest game this Friday, Sept. 14, against third ranked Cedar Falls.

The game will be played at Cedar Falls in the UNI Dome.
