Extra-Curricular Spotlight: FCCLA

Family Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) involves students in the community by helping others and volunteering with service projects.

The club”s officers are elected every school year. Every month the club has one or two community events to participate in. The students also volunteer at Cafe on Vine in Davenport, which provides free lunch for the needy in the community, and Humility Homes and Services (formerly Humility of Mary), which provides temporary and permanent housing for homeless people. The club also volunteers at the Quad City marathon and nursing homes.

To encourage people to go to meetings and events, the club established a system that gives students points for every meeting or event attended. The student with the most points at the end of the school year will receive a prize.

“Helping others shouldn’t be a thought, it should be an instinct,” freshman Morgan Makoben said.

The club will benefit students to be more involved in the community and will train them to have an instinct to help others.

“Being involved in the club gives me a chance to work on teams that do great things,” freshman Lizzie Murcia said.

Most of the activities the club participates in requires teams and gives students a chance to be leaders and to collaborate. For example, at the Festival of Trees the club gets to decorate a tree to be displayed at the festival, which requires cooperation.

“The benefits of this club in my future would be that it would open me up to new opportunities in my community and help me stand out in my college application,” said Maddie Makoben, president.
