Athlete Spotlight: Makayla Hughbanks

Bettendorf High School Athlete Makayla Hughbanks, sophomore, has been involved in a wide variety of sports throughout her athletic career. Hughbanks currently tumbles for a competitive team and dives for the Bettendorf team.

“I’ve tumbled for a while, but I wanted to start diving this year because I love competing, and I wanted to be involved in a school sport,” Hughbanks said.

Although just joining the diving team this past year, Hughbanks has made her mark, as the dive team is currently third in the state. Hughbanks’ personal goal is to make it to the state competition and place well.

“Makayla enjoys diving. She is always excited to learn new things. I have enjoyed her many smiles. It has been fun watching Makayla learn so many new dives,” coach Mary Doerder said.

Hughbanks brings not only great diving ability to the team, but also a positive attitude to the locker room.

“After I had a rough diving meet, Makayla was there to support me… She reassured me,” teammate Annika Braaten said.

Her positive attitude has spread to more than just her teammates. Hughbanks has helped to foster a great atmosphere at the diving meets.

“Makayla is always in a good mood at practice and at meets. She always congratulates everyone after we compete,” teammate Eliza Sherman said.

For not planning on joining the dive team until her mom pushed her to do so, Hughbanks has left a great impact on the program and looks forward to competing throughout her high school career.

“It is really fun, and I have gotten to meet so many new people. It is mentally challenging, but I enjoy that part of it,” Hughbanks said.
