The 2018-2019 Hunger Drive has ended. Bettendorf has four first place Hunger Drive Banners. However, the school did not win the Hunger Drive this year and had disappointing student participation.
Last year, the Bulldogs came in second with 52,107 pounds. This year, the Bulldogs raised over 40,000 pounds of food.
With many events this year, the school did win the Mission Statement Challenge.
The Mission Statement Challenge explained why the Hunger Drive was important to the school. Madison Foht and Mitch Winterlin were in charge of the Mission Statement Challenge.
This year for the Hunger Drive, the theme was based on the popular video game Fortnite and was called Foodnite. There were decorations around the school representing each town in Fortnite.
For example, the math department was Tilted Towers. Each department had a challenge to see which one could raise the most cans.
The world language department raised the most cans and created a vine compilation.
There were many events this year for the Hunger Drive. Trivia Night was a big hit with raising over $1,200 and some cans. At Trivia Night, there was a hotdog vendor, and some of the proceeds went to the Hunger Drive.
Along with Trivia Night, there was Capture the Cans, Fill the Truck and two restaurant benefits. In spite of all the events that the school had, there was not a lot of student participation.
“We did the best we could with the time we had. We had good events but we still think that we need more student participation. Roughly 10 percent of the student body participated and we want that to be higher,” said student council advisor Christina Hesse.
Next year, the goal is to get more student participation, which would lead to more pounds of food.
