Athlete Spotlight: Lucas Hayes

To say that Lucas Hayes loves basketball would be quite the understatement. The junior currently starts for the boys varsity team and has been playing basketball since the third grade.

Hayes was first named a starter in his sophomore year. His 6-foot-7 stature and years of experience in basketball have made Hayes a key factor on the team.

As 5-star point guard D.J. Carton mans the top of the court, Hayes makes his mark at the bottom. His toughness and powerful frame allow Hayes to dominate the paint. The center currently leads the team in field goal percentage, shooting an outstanding 86.7 percent from the field this year, the second highest mark in the state of Iowa.

Hayes is a fundamentally sound player, and his great defense and ability to find high percentage shots has proven to be instrumental for the boys team. With the help of Hayes, the Bulldogs have started the year 3-0.

Hayes does not only provide the Bulldogs with a fundamentally sound game but also a form of leadership that is predicated on positive encouragement.

“Lucas once told me even 'if we are not doing good in a game, the court is long, the ceiling is

short, yet the game is wide open,'” teammate Joseph Byrne said.

The Bulldogs will look to continue their perfect season this Friday against North Scott.
