Originally from Illinois, Carlie Vance has made the switch to Iowa after 17 years and Bettendorf is lucky to have her.

Vance said, “I’m from Port Byron, but stay in Waverly with my dad over the summer. I used to go to Riverdale before I moved.”
While Bettendorf is a different environment, Vance said it’s “a lot more challenging than my old school. There are a lot more opportunities here too, like there were no college courses at Riverdale. Here the teachers really care about the students. They really care about what we do, and they’re not so power driven.”
Vance stays busy with her two jobs, working at Little Sweets daycare and The Fountains retirement home in most of her extra time. Additionally, she joined the National Honor Society here at Bettendorf. At Riverdale, she worked less and participated in National Honor Society, student council, and pep club.
To fill the rest of her time, Vance plays several instruments including the guitar, flute, and ukulele. Vance used to play more frequently, but said because she “moved into an apartment so everyone can hear everything,” she had to limit how much she plays.
Vance lives with her mom and has two older brothers that she is very close with: Cameron, 28, and Colbey, 25. She also has two step brothers and one step sister. Vance has two dogs, Ellie, 10, and Fin, one.
If you won a billion dollars how would you spend it?
“I would wanna buy a dog shelter, just like a little doggie spa shelter, you know? And I’d probably never work again besides there.”
What is your favorite joke?
“What do you call two guys without arms hanging around a window? Curt and Rod.”
Pick any BHS sport and tell me why?
“Wrestling. My brothers wrestled here senior year so I’ve always been around it. Plus my dad used to help out a lot and might have been an assistant coach at Bettendorf.”
