Hailing from Whitebear Lake, Minnesota, Matthew Garside decided to head for warmer weather to start his senior year. Garside lives with his parents and has two older brothers, Thomas and James.
As the best high school golfer in the state, it is no secret that Garside spends most of his time on the course. With a lot of support from his parents, and with a father who was a PGA professional himself, Garside has become the great golfer he is today.
Garside said, “My dad taught me what he knows and helped me with my swing.”
He has enjoyed Bettendorf and said, “It’s pretty good, I like being so close to home and like off campus lunch. I’m also looking forward to an off block fourth block.”
Garside has been golfing since he was six and plans to continue in college at the University of Iowa while studying business.
Of the five, poise, respect, integrity, determination, and excellence, which guides your life the most?
“Respect. I think it is important to respect everyone and treat others the way I would like to be treated. I don’t know what people are going through so I need to put myself in their shoes.”
If you were trapped in a burning building, who here would you trust to save you?
“Ms. Kelly. It’s her responsibility to look after the students and I think It’d be her first consideration to get us all out.”
Pick a superpower:
“I’d choose superspeed. It would be cool never to be late and to complete tasks quickly.”
What is one activity you would have done if you hadn’t done golf?
“I played basketball freshman year. I would have kept playing but I wasn’t good enough. My old school was pretty good at basketball so I don’t think I’d get much playing time.”
If you could change anything about yourself, what would you change?
“I am very happy with my life, I don’t think I would change anything.”
What is your favorite joke?
“Saturday and Sunday are the strongest days, the others are all week days. Something like that.”
Favorites:
Some of Matthews favorites include Raising Cane’s Chicken for food, City of New Orleans as his favorite song, blue as his favorite color, and Mrs. Roeder, Coach Hansen, and Coach Like are his favorite teachers.
