Staff Spotlight

Originally from Fairbank, Iowa, Connie King is a sister to two brothers and the daughter of a John Deere farmer and a secretary.

After graduating high school, King left Fairbank to pursue a degree in English at the University of Northern Iowa. Later, King would go on to earn a master's degree from The University of Iowa in journalism and a master’s degree in instructional design from Western Illinois University.

King sold advertisements for newspapers for five years, before realizing her passion for teaching. First, King taught at Assumption High School for 14 years, then transferred to Bettendorf in 2003.

Currently, King teaches Grammar Writing, Publications, Honors English 9 and Popular Adult Literature.

“My favorite parts of teaching at BHS are my awesome students and the teachers I work with; these are the best coworkers I have ever had at any job,” King said.

A fun fact about King is she first read her favorite book, “Mara, Daughter of the Nile” by Eloise Jarvis McGraw, in fifth grade.

“I love teaching, but I also love the summer breaks. This summer I’m planning a three week trip to Europe,” King said.

Outside of teaching, King enjoys reading, biking, gardening, singing in a church choir, cleaning up neighborhoods on a “Green Team” and participating in book clubs.
