Seven students accepted into SEIBA Honor Band

Seven Bettendorf High School band members made it into the South Eastern Bandmaster’s Association. These students are Abbey van Middlesworth on trumpet, Katie Roseman and Kristin Boyler on flute, Jaylon Foster and KD Williams on clarinet, Owen Weimer on jazz trombone, and Patrick Mooney as a horn alternate.

“This is my first time auditioning for SEIBA because I was really busy with volleyball during this season in previous years,” Abbey Van Middlesworth, senior trumpet player, said

Van Middlesworth had been working hard on her scales, the etudes, or short musical pieces, and solo piece since late October. She has been playing trumpet since the fifth grade, making this her eighth year playing.

“Scales are really the big thing you have to get perfect. They’re easy if you practice, but you can also easily make a mistake,” Van Middlesworth said.

Van Middlesworth is one of 15 trumpets to be accepted and is the fourth chair.

Some students have only been preparing for their audition for a few months; however, Katie Roseman has been preparing since the beginning of the school year.

“I chose to audition for SEIBA because I like the challenge of preparing the etudes and solos,” Roseman, sophomore flute player, said.

Roseman has made SEIBA Honor Band twice in her four years of auditioning. This will be her fifth.

“There’s a lot of flutes auditioning this year, so I think my chances are a little slim, but I’ve been working hard anyway,” Roseman said.

Despite her fears of not making it, Roseman was one of the seven students from the high school to make it into SEIBA. They ended up taking a total of 14 flute players and Roseman is the ninth chair.
