Show choirs receive awards at Davenport North

Surround Sound, the varsity show choir, received fourth place in day time awards, best treble soloist (Hannah Wilson), best crew, and fifth place in finals. Audio Intensity, the prep show choir, placed fourth place in the prep division and received the best bass soloist (Jack Cannon).

Bettendorf show choirs, Audio Intensity and Surround Sound, competed at Davenport North’s Big Dance competition on Saturday, Feb. 1.

Hannah Wilson, a junior in Surround Sound, claimed the best treble soloist award for the second week in a row after receiving it at Dubuque-Wahlert’s competition on Saturday, Jan. 25.

Wilson has been singing her entire life, but she began to work on her skills more once she entered high school. She received the solo in the fall after auditioning with other show choir singers.

“I am very honored. After listening to all the other soloists throughout the day, it’s a really cool thing to think that I did the best,” Wilson said.

Jack Cannon, a senior in Audio Intensity, received the Big Dance’s best bass soloist in the prep division.

“I feel pretty cool, it’s the first trophy I’ve ever received. My mom’s been taking a lot of pictures too,” Cannon said.

Cannon received the solo after auditioning in the fall, and he has been practicing every week since July on his vocals, even turning on his solo music each time he gets in his car.

“Show choir is so much fun. I think if you’re on the verge of joining it, it’s the best decision I’ve made in my high school career. I met my girlfriend and close friends from the show band. Now, I’m a singer-dancer and I have an award on top of it all,” Cannon said.

You can show support for Bettendorf’s show choirs by coming to Rhythm on the Riverbend, Bettendorf’s home competition, on Saturday, Feb. 8. The groups will compete at three more competitions this season.
