Singing and dancing their way to success

The last competition for show choir, which brings sadness to many of its members, was last Saturday, Feb. 29, at Marion Masquerade at Marion high school.

“The show choir competition season is a month and a half of performing each weekend with 17 to 23 hour days. In total, we have six months of working on the music and making it the best we can. It is exhausting, but it is so worth the time and hard work put into the show,” Laurel Wade said.

For some people, it was their first year in show choir or their first year trying out a new aspect of show choir.

“It was my first year on crew, and I experienced so many new things and found a love for it,” Elena Sierra said.

There are many different aspects of show choir that can be someone's favorite part.

“I love that I met new people and made new friends,” Maker Cervantes said.

The feeling people get before or while performing varies from person to person.

“Before I perform, I get excited, but at the same time, anxious,” Jackson Mendez said.

Other people feel more anxiety while performing.

“The first ten seconds while performing are always an adrenaline rush,” Aiden Doe said.

People who are in show choir understand the importance of different components of the team. Each member plays a role in how the show turns out.

“Next year I am going to be a singer/ dancer because I have seen the energy of people on stage. I want to be a part of that aspect and enjoy the fun they share,” Cervantes said.

The competition at Marion was the last for many seniors.

“I think it went really well. We [Surround Sound] got third and we performed our hearts off. We walked off the stage and everyone was proud of what we accomplished. We didn't even care about the placement anymore because we are so happy with how it went,” Doe said.

Audio Intensity placed third in the 4A prep-division, with the best female soloist, Lauren Schenck. Surround Sound placed third during daytime in the 4A varsity division and third in finals, along with winning best band for the second week in a row.

“I think it speaks to the hard work the team has put in for the last few years or trying to get first place band,” Eric Newton said.
