Conservation club celebrates Earth Day

Bettendorf High School’s conservation club participated in a campus cleanup in celebration of Earth Day on Tuesday, April 22. Earth Day is an annual event that shows appreciation to the beautiful place called home, and to provide awareness of the issues threatening Earth. In order to show some love in the community on this special day, the conservation club casted around the campus of BHS. The members picked up trash, and planted a few plants.

“I think Earth Day should be focused on more, and not blown off,” sophomore Alex Driever said.

With the high school being a high traffic area, trash easily collects among the grounds of the school. The club's work is very beneficial to the school, and the surrounding community.

Besides cleaning up the campus on Earth Day, the conservation club has served a great deal of purpose throughout the school year.

“The goal of our club is to improve our campus, provide help clean up, and persevere the environment,” senior Charlotte Barnes said.

Recently, the club collected 400 pounds of recycled caps and lids that will be used to construct two benches. The benches are in memory of Tyler Hurd and Keith Bonnstetter, two cherished members of the Bettendorf High School community that passed away this past year. Along with cleaning up trash, the club has planted multiple trees and plants around the campus.

“If you see a can, pick it up. It's some simple thing you can do to clean up the environment, "senior Caiti Wyrwas said.
